About the Place
Maxwell's Beef, nestled at 2003 63rd St in Downers Grove, Illinois, is a cherished local gem known for its authentic Italian beef sandwiches, savory gyros, and classic American fare. For over a decade, it has drawn loyal patrons who appreciate not just the food but the unpretentious atmosphere that feels more like a neighborhood spot than a franchise.
The highlight here is undeniably the Italian beef sandwich—tender, juicy, and richly seasoned—earning high praise from customers who describe it as consistently satisfying. Complementing this signature dish are the gyros, sliced fresh from the spit, delivering that perfect balance of spices and texture which evokes the essence of traditional Mediterranean flavors. The cheeseburgers, made to order on toasted buns, are another standout, offering a comforting, juicy bite that rivals larger chain offerings.
Maxwell's also excels in its sides. The fries, often freshly prepared and golden crisp, have been called “on point” by many visitors, though occasional small batches may vary. Their chili surprises with hearty, robust flavors that bring warmth and depth, perfectly enhancing the sandwich experience. Even the hot dogs, simple yet satisfying, complete a menu designed for those who seek genuine flavor without pretense.
While the setting leans heavily toward takeout with limited and somewhat worn seating, the friendly service—especially from the kitchen staff who greet you with smiles—and ample parking make it a convenient stop. The owner’s straightforward demeanor doesn’t detract from the overall experience, which centers on delivering hearty, flavorful meals at an accessible price point.
In essence, Maxwell's Beef represents the heart of classic Midwestern comfort food—strongly rooted in tradition, generously portioned, and served with honest care. For anyone craving authentic Italian beef, gyros with genuine Mediterranean notes, or a fully loaded cheeseburger that respects its craft, Maxwell's is a must-visit destination in Downers Grove.
“ This is the second time I’ve been here. It’s a good local spot. Yes, it seems like the owner on the register never smiles or presents a positive customer experience. However, the Mexicans doing the cooking always give you a smile and tell you to have a nice day while they hand you your food. They have seating inside and outside. One of the stools inside needs to be fixed. Lots of parking. I ordered an Italian beef with sweet peppers and a pizza puff. The meat in the Italian beef is not dry, it’s moist throughout. The pizza puff has a crunchy exterior and ample filling on the inside. Portions are pretty good. I did order gyros and a burger in the past, both were delicious. The portions for those were huge. Definitely a solid lunch choice. ”
“ A little hole in the wall type place, no real dining room, just some counters to sit at if you want to eat there, so pretty much a take-out place. But really good Italian beef and gyros, run by a guy who's been there for decades, I have a lot of respect for that. Highly recommend. ”
“ We went their on a recommendation and were not disappointed. The food was amazing. Service was spot on. We are originally from that area and we wanted gyro off the spit. It was so yummy. Portions on there Gyro plate were outstanding. Kudos to this place! ”
“ I wanted to try the Italian beef sandwich and it did not disappoint! Great sandwich. Also, I was pleasantly surprised by their chili. Much better than I had anticipated. Very hearty and tasty. I will definitely be back again. ”
“ Great food. The fries were on point along with my hotdog. The only thing I would’ve done is grab more ketchup. I didn’t know I was going to get that amount of fries. I will definitely buy again when I’m in the area. ”
